Long before books, before screens, before the world learned to move so fast, there was a grandmother’s voice in the evening air — and there was Ushen.

Every Amazigh child knows him. Every Moroccan grandmother who ever gathered her grandchildren close and began a tale has summoned him into the room. He is swift beyond belief — so swift that some Amazigh tribes swore he was a wolf, others a fox, others something altogether beyond naming. At Agafay Books, we know what he is: a fennec fox, small and golden and impossibly clever, with ears wide enough to hear the desert breathing and a heart brave enough to cross it alone.

Today, Ushen wears his jellaba and red fes with pride — a bridge between the ancient world that shaped him and the Moroccan children he is here to inspire.

The Agafay Desert asked everything of him. Ushen’s mission was not glory or treasure — it was water. The most humble, the most sacred, the most endangered resource our earth carries within her. He walked, he searched, he did not give up. And when he finally found it, he understood something that no classroom could have taught him: that to find water is not enough. To protect it; that is the true quest.
