Meet Mira SHIHADEH
Mira is a Palestinian artist who has spent much of her life painting walls, and she lives in Cairo today. There she created murals in homes, cafés and restaurants, and on the streets of downtown after the uprising of 2011. In 2013 she designed the logo for Women on Walls, a campaign that brought nearly forty artists to paint in Egyptian cities, and she led its Cairo edition. Her work has been shown in New York, Cairo and London, and she appears in the documentary Nefertiti's Daughters.
Her path has never been a straight line. She began in New York, as a photo researcher and a student of stone carving. Later she taught yoga in Cairo for more than a decade. She sees it all as connected: her art, her teaching and her activism grow from the same place.
With Agafay Books, Mira illustrated Mrs. Boowa's Colorful Emotions, written by Fatima Zahra Mokhtari and published in English and Arabic in the collection Bab El-Wijdan. The book was born from a collaboration between East and West, and from a simple, generous idea: happiness, sadness, anger, surprise and fear are felt by everyone, everywhere, and that connects us all.
Drawing emotions is a real challenge, and Mira took it on by hand, with a great deal of detail in every image.
