Meet Alae ASLI
Alae was born in Taza and now lives in Tetouan, where, at 25, he studies Cultural and Civilizational Communication at the university. Before that, he earned a Bachelor's degree in Applied Biology.
Words came easily to him from a young age. At thirteen he decided to become an author, inspired by many different sources. At seventeen, his father suggested that he should translate a novel he bought, and, as Alae puts it, the rest is history. That novel was طائر الوروار by Al-Madani Addadi, which he translated into English as Ahmed Krifla: The Iridescent bird. In 2022, his short story The Thought of an Acceptable Murder won first place in English at the third Short Story Contest of Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University.
With Agafay Books, Alae is publishing a trilogy, In the Ink trilogy, illustrated by Ismail Oulkaid. Its first installment involves a teenage girl who starts receiving books from some unknown force. As she reads, her life mixes with the story in the pages. When she opens Edith Wharton's book on Morocco just as her family is preparing for Ramadan, Edith herself walks into the kitchen to lend a hand.
Stories come to Alae without warning. "It just happens," he says. An idea pops up, and the real work is getting the skeleton of the story right. He keeps a small circle of friends and shares his work with only a few of them. When asked what matters most to him, his answer includes the help he received from Allah in getting through difficult times.
His hope is simple: « I wish to be remembered as someone who tried, with every story, to write something useful ».
