Some changes can’t be hidden. But no girl has to face them alone.
One morning in a village beneath the Atlas Mountains, Aziza wakes with a strange ache. Her body is changing, and nobody has told her what to expect.
Confused and scared, Aziza turns to the people around her, and each one makes the road a little easier. Her grandmother, Lalla Saïda, once counted her days by the moon. Her mother, Zoubida, explains everything with patience and warmth. A teacher at school actually listens. And among her friends, Aziza finds she is not the only one with questions: about painful cramps, about worries she was afraid to voice, about everything she thought only she felt.
A warm, honest story rooted in Moroccan village life. It replaces fear and silence with knowledge, and it shows that growing up is easier when you are not alone.
Told in rich, carefully crafted Arabic and sprinkled with Darija, it helps young readers grow their vocabulary and feel closer to their language as they learn to understand their own bodies.
For girls aged 9 and up, and for the mothers, grandmothers, and teachers who walk beside them.

Description
Why this book
In Morocco, many girls reach puberty without knowing what is happening to their bodies. Traditionally, knowledge about the menstrual cycle is passed on through conversations between mothers and daughters, or grandmothers and granddaughters. Yet in many families and communities, periods remain a source of shame and stigma. Girls are left with unanswered questions, feeling ashamed of a natural part of growing up. That shame can make it harder to ask for help and leave them struggling in silence.
Since 2017, Project SOAR has been helping girls understand their bodies and manage their periods by combining menstrual health education with access to reusable menstrual products. Their work fosters period-positive environments where girls gain the knowledge and confidence to care for their menstrual and mental health.
Together, we created حين يكتمل القمر, a book that answers the questions girls ask, and the ones they are afraid to ask. The text comes from Project SOAR’s work in the field, and the illustrations are by Nohaila Chakir.
The book will be distributed free of charge by Project SOAR in its field work. English and French editions are in preparation, a way to share our traditions beyond Morocco and to support girls in the Moroccan diaspora.
For girls in middle school and beyond, and for the mothers, grandmothers, and teachers who walk beside them.
